Sutton Council to install zebra crossing in Hackbridge

by Sunita Gordon on 25 November, 2015

Sutton Council is to start work on a zebra crossing on Hackbridge Road and is asking Hackbridge residents about other road crossings at key areas in the town centre.

The zebra crossing at 1 Hackbridge Road will replace the current informal crossing point near Hackbridge Primary School and will be installed in December.

The council is now consulting with Hackbridge residents on other possible sites for zebra crossings in the area. This follows concerns by residents that the informal crossings introduced last year as part of the Heart of Hackbridge scheme are confusing for some motorists and pedestrians. Disability groups have also raised a number of concerns about the informal crossings.

As a result, the council is reinstalling a zebra crossing on Hackbridge Road and consulting on options for other road crossings. Four layout designs have been created by working alongside community groups including Hackbridge Primary School, the Beddington and Hackbridge Neighbourhood Group, Hackbridge Safety First, local traders, Sutton Police, London Buses and Sutton Vision.

The four options are:

  • A zebra crossing at 1 Hackbridge Road only, to be installed shortly.
  • The zebra crossing at 1 Hackbridge Road and a second zebra crossing at 156 London Road (William Hill Bookmakers), in place of the informal crossing.
  • The zebra crossing at 1 Hackbridge Road and a second zebra crossing at 25 London Road (in front of the hair salon), in place of the informal crossing.
  • The zebra crossing at 1 Hackbridge Road and a second zebra crossing at 146 London Road (near the fish and chip shop).

The replacement of informal crossings on London Road will require the loss of a number of parking bays and are set out in detail in the consultation leaflet.

The four designs have been Road Safety audited and the reports can be read by clicking https://www.sutton.gov.uk/outerlondonfund.

In addition, traffic signals are also to be introduced on London Road at the Felnex and Hackbridge Station junction by the developers of the Felnex trading estate independently of the council. This will provide a fully signal-controlled pedestrian crossing.

Hackbridge residents can tell Sutton Council which road crossing option they prefer by visiting www.sutton.gov.uk/outerlondonfund. Alternatively, they can either fill in the consultation form and place it in the ballot box at Sainsbury’s on Hackbridge Road or put it in an envelope and post it to:
