9th March Sutton Street Cleaning review residents 2nd session

by Sunita Gordon on 5 March, 2011

This session will be on Wednesday March 9, from 7 – 9 pm, at the Life Centre (http://www.sutton.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=11378).

As part of the Council’s Smarter Services Sutton transformation programme, we are looking at how we can make £1.01m of savings by changing the way we provide the Street Cleaning service.  We are reviewing the following:

·         All street cleaning operations; litter picking, mechanical sweeping, manual sweeping, emptying of litter bins, graffiti and fly tip removal, weeding

·         Administration and IT systems

·         Number, type and usage of vehicles

·         Gritting, filling grit bins, providing grit to residents, dealing with extreme weather events such as flooding, and leaf collection

·         Enforcement of fines for fly tipping/dog fouling /dropping litter

Some ideas have already been suggested:

·         Generate income, for example, by charging for graffiti removal from commercial properties

·         Introduce different frequency of cleansing in different parts of the borough

·         Reduce the number of vehicles we use

·         Outsource the service to a private contractor or create a partnership with neighbouring borough

We would like your ideas on how we can transform our service and achieve savings. At the session on Wednesday, we want to both hear your ideas and to get your views on some of the options we are currently looking at.

Additionally, you can also tell us your views on Speak Out Sutton: http://www.speakoutsutton.co.uk/saving-a31-million-in-the-cost-of-the-street-cleansing-service

Please feel free to email Aria Laskin with any questions / ideas (aria.laskin@sutton.gov.uk), and we hope to see you on Wednesday.
