Tales From My Town Hall

16 January 2023 – Full Council Meeting

First Council meeting of 2023, we were all looking forward to discussing important issues that are concerning us and our residents alike. Here is the meeting agenda and recording link https://moderngov.sutton.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=146&MId=5789

As I look at the other side of the hall there are more than 60 people and some holding placards “STOP ULEZ”. Protesting at a Council meeting in Sutton is the wrong place they should be protesting at the City Hall in London outside Mayor Khan’s office, it is his decision to go ahead with ULEZ extension to all London Boroughs, not the boroughs themselves!

Meeting opens with questions, first is about ULEZ, leader of the Council Ruth Dombey explains that we don’t support ULEZ and LBSutton is going to stop the Mayor Sadiq Khan from placing his cameras on our streets.

A few cheers from the crowd who have been encouraged to attend the meeting misinformed by the opposition and via FACEBOOK that the meeting is about ULEZ……..

As the Mayor, Trish Fivey, explains that we are here to discuss items on the agenda. Opposition Councillors start to shout and run into the crowd to whip them up further.

What has happened to civility in Britain and why shouting and spreading misinformation has become acceptable. Somehow the Tories populist right-wing party seems to be growing here in Sutton and it is not helped by the two Tory MP’s who are well known for being self-serving, over serving the residents or borough interests, take a look at the latest Sky News Westminster Accounts https://news.sky.com/story/westminster-accounts-search-for-your-mp-or-enter-your-full-postcode-12771627

You guessed it, the meeting progressed and opposition behaviour got progressively worse. Adults in society should hold up standards for what they sign up to do in both their public and private lives, such as what they say, write, promise and do. However, the opposition are no role models for our millennials, which is evidenced via recording on this page https://moderngov.sutton.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=146&MId=5789

Politicians in Britain are in a race to the bottom, as their behaviour in the parliament is being replicated by their wannabes in local government.
