Tales From My Town Hall

by Sunita Gordon on 27 April, 2023

21 April London Borough of Sutton Council meeting began like any other, with members taking their seats, to discuss items on the agenda, which was cleared for the DISCUSSION ON THE EXTENSION OF THE ULTRA LOW EMISSIONS ZONE (ULEZ) TO THE BOROUGH. Residents had to pre register if they wished to speak at this special Council meeting.

The main topic of discussion was Mayor Sadiq Khan’s proposed ULEZ charge, and the citizens of Sutton made sure their voices were heard. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as speakers eagerly awaited the chance to share their thoughts and opinions.

As the main topic was announced – the proposed £12.50 daily ULEZ charge on non-compliant vehicles – the room was filled with a sense of determination. Suttonians were ready to make their case, arguing that the charge was regressive and would put undue financial pressure on residents who were already struggling with the rising cost of living.

With a friendly and respectful demeanour, the residents came forward when called to express their concerns about the ULEZ charge. Some acknowledged the importance of reducing emissions in London, but were heckled by the crowd in the public gallery.

After the residents’ speeches the meeting returned to its normal format and the Liberal Democrat Councillor spoke passionately about this unfair tax on Sutton residents. And LibDem Councillors emphasised the need for better public transport options in Sutton.

One, LibDem Councillor with a warm smile, shared, “I understand the goal of this charge is to help our environment, but we need to make sure that our public transport system is efficient and accessible for all residents before imposing additional costs.” The room nodded in agreement, as the spirit of community grew stronger.

Throughout the meeting, the residents of Sutton demonstrated a strong sense of unity and camaraderie. They showcased the power of community engagement and proved that working together in a friendly and cooperative manner can lead to progress.

To Mayor Sadiq Khan, we the LibDem Councillors suggest taking note and watching the video recording that we are going to send you along with this petition that is signed by many. As you continue to work on the ULEZ charge and other initiatives, remember the importance of listening to the communities you serve and finding solutions that balance environmental goals with the well-being of residents.
